Heating and Cooling

No matter what climate you live in, the biggest energy users in your home are the heating and cooling equipment. They account for up to 45 percent of your total energy costs. An inefficient HVAC system could cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars each year.

Your CRI Technician – as part of the HES Program – will measure the airflow through your duct system when your heating or cooling system is operating. Based on test results, CRI will seal leaks or offer recommendations on how to improve the system.

Some things that will affect the efficiency of your heating and cooling systems are:

  1. The age of the heating unit. If your unit is old, upgrading your system can save you money and increase your comfort.
  2. If oil heat is used, an upgraded retention head burner, even on an old furnace or boiler, is an upgrade worth making.
  3. If ductwork is present, quality insulation can increase system efficiency.
  4. Supplemental heating and cooling sources, such as wood stoves and window air conditioners can be evaluated if your main system is not up to the task.
  5. Newer central air units, less than 10 years old, are 25–40 percent more efficient than older units.

If it is time to replace your heating system, CRI will help you with any eligible rebates or tax credits. To learn more about what type of system to purchase, click here. And remember, through CRI’s Contractor Coordination services, CRI will make sure that any additional work is done properly and at the best possible price.
